Switching nursing specialties takes time, effort

Nurses should spend from two to five years getting to know a specialty area before making a career switch, says RN Amy Nichols, associate professor at San Francisco State University School of Nursing. She also recommends asking about the level of employer support available when transitioning from one area of nursing to another.
