Wash. Legislature passes mandatory MRSA screening bill

The Washington State Senate has unanimously approved and sent to the governor a bill mandating that hospitals screen high-risk patients for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Four other states have similar laws. The legislation requires hospitals to adopt an MRSA screening policy by Jan. 1, 2010, that includes screening of adult or pediatric ICU patients within the first 24 hours and informing patients of an MRSA diagnosis.
