DNA-based method might prevent occurrence of genetic diseases

U.K. scientists said they were able to transfer a genetic material derived from a fertilized human egg into a donor egg with healthy mitochondria, a technique that might prevent an offspring from inheriting a genetic disorder caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA. The scientists said they plan to further test the technique in humans to determine whether it could enable parents with genetic variations to give birth to healthy babies.
