More than 75 students and teachers, mainly from three schools, were among the 600 people confirmed dead after a massive earthquake Wednesday in China. In Qinghai province, where the quake hit, at least 11 schools were destroyed and dozens of children were thought to be trapped. The safety of China's schools came under scrutiny in 2008 after thousands of students were killed as schools collapsed when an earthquake hit Sichuan. The government launched a program last year to inspect and reinforce schools in earthquake-prone areas and strengthen standards for school buildings.
