New NYC schools chancellor to start Monday

Dennis Walcott will take over as chancellor of New York City schools Monday after receiving a state waiver, which the deputy mayor needed because he is not a licensed superintendent. Unlike his predecessor, however, he does have a background in education, having served as a classroom teacher and obtaining a master's degree in education. In granting the waiver, state Education Commissioner David Steiner said Walcott "demonstrates a deep knowledge of the New York City school system."
