Retail's bright spot: Dollar stores

As consumers across the U.S. trade down to deal with the recession, one segment of the retail market has benefited: dollar stores. Discount retailer Family Dollar keeps prices low by selling second- and third-tier brands and by choosing inexpensive locations. Family Dollar has also benefited from a five-year revamp, which included a strategy for luring shoppers into their stores more often.
