Synthetic compound might halt replication of bird flu virus

Researchers in Hong Kong and the U.S. discovered an artificial compound, called compound 1 or NSC89853, that was effective in preventing the reproduction of seasonal flu and H5N1 bird flu viruses in cultured human cells. The compound can be used in drug development, but it could take as long as eight years before such a treatment would reach the market, one of the scientists said.
