Engineer sees promise in steel fibers instead of rebar

A new use for steel fibers could be applied to buildings in earthquake zones, according to engineer Cary Kopczynski, president of the Bellevue, Wash.-based structural firm that bears his name. He plans to use steel fibers as structural reinforcement in a concrete high-rise to reduce congestion in shear walls.
