HHS proposes changes for determining hospital wage index

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius submitted to Congress a reform proposal that uses a method developed by Acumen LLC to take into account commuting data to determine labor markets for Medicare's hospital wage index. The proposal would allow "a more up-to-date reporting system for collecting commuting data from hospitals ... so that the wage index calculations would actually reflect the commuting patterns of hospital employees," according to the HHS report.
