Multiple procedure payment reduction is based on overestimated efficiency when different physicians in the same practice interpret multiple imaging tests from a single session, according to a study in a radiology journal. The highest possible duplication rate for pre- and post-service activities was at 5% for nuclear medicine, radiography and fluoroscopy, the study said. "In contrast to the single systematic 25% professional payment reduction implemented by CMS, our expert panel's code-specific analysis supports MPPR discounts averaging only 1.23% when subsequent different services are rendered by different physicians in the same group," researchers wrote.
