Near-term trends emerging for renewables

A variety of factors related to technology, incentives and business models will affect how renewable energy develops in the near term, writes Nancy Giges. Among other things, solar-panel makers will need to innovate to avoid commoditization of their products, and individual and micro-grid applications of renewables are likely to expand. Energy storage and smart-grid technologies are also expected to advance, she contends.
