Polymer coating for ships wrinkles up to shed barnacles

A silicon rubber polymer coating on a ship’s hull can be electrified to subtly change shape enough to slough off barnacles and other biofouling material. The product, developed by Duke University engineers, "basically form[s] a wrinkle ... and the biofouling substances simply detach," said Xuanhe Zhao, a Duke mechanical engineering researcher.
