Study to determine right hemoglobin level before post-op transfusion

British researchers plan to examine whether withholding post-operative blood transfusions until a cardiac patient reaches a lower hemoglobin level will have a positive impact on surgery outcomes and reduce hospital costs. The researchers say routine blood transfusions after heart surgery may be wasting blood supplies and placing patients at risk of more medical problems.
