Geithner adds to debate regarding derivatives trading

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner sent a letter to Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., saying tougher restrictions on trading of derivatives are at the center of the financial-reform effort. However, Geithner stopped short of suggesting an outright ban on banks' derivatives trading. Lincoln had proposed requiring major financial institutions to split off derivatives-trading operations.
