Parents criticize plan to consolidate special education at new school

Some parents in Springfield, Mo., are upset about a plan that would consolidate special-education instruction and services for young students at a centrally located Early Childhood Special Education Center in the district. Among other issues, some parents are unhappy about moving their children out of neighborhood schools to attend the new school, arguing that keeping the students in mainstream schools closer to home would be a better option. "He needs to be around a lot of other peers," one parent said of her son. "That helps his skills."
