Vatican backtracks on gays and abuse scandal

Under fire after a senior Vatican official appeared to tie a sex-abuse scandal to homosexuality, Catholic Church officials sought to clarify comments made this week by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state. Bertone earlier said he had been given information linking homosexuality and pedophilia, but, after an uproar over the comments, church officials later issued a statement, saying, "Church authorities do not consider it their responsibility to make general statements of a specifically physiological or medical character."
