"5 S" method beats sugar in relieving infant pain after shots

When soothed with four of the "5 S's" -- swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing sounds, swinging and sucking -- most babies stopped crying within 45 seconds of a vaccine injection, according to a study published in the journal Pediatrics. Researchers noted that babies who were given a sugar solution to relieve pain were still crying two minutes after the shot.
