Engineers to put 5-story building in huge quake test

Engineers plan to shake a five-story structure as part of efforts to improve building codes and prevent earthquake-related fires. The test, which will mimic a magnitude 6.7 tremor that struck Northridge in Los Angeles in 1994, will be done at the University of California, San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering facility. "What we are doing is the equivalent of giving this whole building an EKG to see how it performs after an earthquake and a fire," said UC San Diego engineer Tara Hutchinson.
