OIG says U.S. nursing homes are not prepared for disasters

The nation's nursing homes are not prepared to protect or care for residents during natural disasters, according to a report from the HHS inspector general's office. Medicare and Medicaid should add emergency planning and training to requirements for nursing home disaster plans, according to the report. Inspectors visited nursing homes in Minnesota, North Dakota and other states and found many emergency plans lacked details on treatment, transportation and medication protocols for emergencies and evacuations.
