Proposed bill to require drug firms to provide rebates

U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., and four other House members introduced a bill requiring makers of brand-name drugs to provide rebates to Medicare for medications used by the program's beneficiaries who also are eligible for Medicaid. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va, and 18 other senators backed the proposed legislation. "Unlike familiar consumer rebates that return savings to shoppers, this policy would undermine a successful and popular program to send 'rebates' to the Federal Treasury, not seniors," PhRMA Senior Vice President Matthew Bennett said.
