Stock market plunge reaps benefits for volatility index investors

Monday's stock market swoon carried a silver lining for those who dabble in volatility derivatives. The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index shot up 43%, and two other measures also saw double-digit increases. The VIX gain was its largest since August 2011. "Today is the reason why you hold VIX," said Mark Mandell of Dalton Investments.
