Vt. lawmakers concerned about economic impact of plastic-bag tax

Vermont legislators are concerned that a proposal to impose a 10-cent tax on plastic grocery bags would harm any hopes of economic recovery, despite the estimated $6 million to $9 million that the bag tax is expected to generate. "I say bag the bag tax," said state Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin, D-Putney. The American Chemistry Council encourages recycling and opposes taxes on plastic bags, said Shari Jackson, who directs an ACC plastic-bag program.
