Concrete base is placed for new containment shelter at Chernobyl

The concrete-and-steel containment structure at Chernobyl in Ukraine was built in an emergency, leaks radiation and has only five years left in its service life. A concrete base has been placed for a new structure that will have a high arched roof and be sealed for a century. However, Ukraine needs about $1 billion to complete the project and construct storage for spent fuel.
