Pilot project helps reduce pressure ulcers in ICUs

An initiative at St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare hospitals to reduce pressure ulcers resulted in a 58% decrease in hospital-acquired ulcers in two ICUs and a neuro renal unit, and a 30% systemwide reduction from 2009 to 2011. Best practices were developed in the unit pilot projects, including pressure redistribution by turning some patients every two hours.
