Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have proposed a floating nuclear power plant concept that is similar to an offshore platform used by the petroleum industry. "The ocean itself can be used as an infinite heat sink. The decay heat, which is generated by the nuclear fuel even after the reactor is shut down, can be removed indefinitely," said Jacopo Buongiorno, an associate professor of nuclear science and engineering at MIT. Among the concept's advantages are efficient construction and very low environmental effect, the researchers said.
