Additional insurance firms come under fire for alleged coverage denials

Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., chairman of the Senate commerce committee, has forwarded letters to Aetna and Coventry Health Care requesting data related to reports that the two insurance companies are denying coverage for diagnostic cardiac tests, including nuclear stress tests. The committee wants to know the guidelines that the companies use to determine whether the tests are necessary, as well as the number of tests that have been approved and denied in the past five years. An Aetna spokesman said the firm's preauthorization program is designed to shield its members from "unnecessary risk and cost" while Coventry chose not to comment on the matter.
