AHRQ reports 52% rise in drug-related adverse events

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reported that the number of drug-related hospitalizations in the U.S. increased from 1.2 million to 1.9 million in the 2004 to 2008 period, with patients age 65 and older accounting for 53% of such hospitalizations. Unspecified medicines led the way for the most cases of emergency department visits, while corticosteroids made up the biggest share of hospital admissions for drug-related side effects and injuries, the report found.
