If you want to be a good boss, ask team members what you can do to help them "be more effective," which also will help you know their concerns, write Linda Hill and Kent Lineback. "[Y]ou need to know what people expect from you, the boss. If you don't know what they expect, and their expectations are unreasonable, you can't negotiate new ones and you'll go on disappointing them," they write.
