U.S. reactor operators beat deadline to acquire emergency equipment

All U.S. nuclear plant operators met a March 31 deadline to procure new emergency equipment, which is part of the industry's efforts to bolster safety in aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi incident in Japan, according to the Nuclear Energy Institute. The equipment includes pumps, generators, battery charges, satellite communications and hoses. "The nuclear industry is responding to the lessons learned from Fukushima with actions that provide the greatest safety benefit in the quickest amount of time," said Tony Pietrangelo, NEI's senior vice president and chief nuclear officer.
