What does the future hold for the U.S. Education Department?

The elimination of the U.S. Education Department has been mentioned this year as part of some presidential campaigns. Likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney, in comments overheard Sunday by reporters, said, if elected, he would reduce but not eliminate the agency. The Education Department was established under President Jimmy Carter and began operating in 1980, and has been targeted in the past by politicians seeking to reduce the federal role in education.
