Can geo-location companies learn to share?

Geo-location service providers are investing huge amounts of time and money to produce near-identical databases linking GPS coordinates to specific places and businesses. Erick Schonfeld suggests that these companies should pool their resources and create a collaborative location database, allowing the networks to focus on differentiating themselves by providing innovative services, rather than better data. "Facebook Connect showed that things work better when we all play nice. [T]he 'Facebook Connect of places' would be amazing," notes Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley in response to the idea.
