Maine should promote NPs to ease primary care shortage

Health care institutions in Maine need to focus on promoting the independent role of nurse practitioners in their provider mix amid a growing shortage of primary care providers, writes Michael Hiltz, an NP student at the University of Southern Maine. Research has shown that NPs are cost-effective and they provide care that is comparable to that delivered by physicians, Hiltz says.
