Study: Melanoma depth doesn't predict sentinel lymph node metastasis

Doctors often decide whether to perform sentinel lymph node biopsy based on tumor thickness and margin status, but according to a retrospective analysis of 260 adults, the incidence of sentinel node metastasis is statistically no different between patients with thinner or thicker melanomas. "Thus, we believe that thin melanomas with positive deep margins should be treated with wide excision and a sentinel lymph node biopsy," surgeon Dr. Victor Koshenkov said.
