Expert advocates standardization of breast density reporting

Current breast density reporting depends largely on estimates and judgment based on individual clinical experience, said Kwan-Hoong Ng, a professor at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Professional groups and stakeholders must develop a standardized protocol for breast density reporting, and support software is also needed, Ng said. A standardized protocol will improve follow-up care, limit costs, enhance communication, and in the long run it will allow for the early diagnosis of breast cancer and save lives, according to Ng.
