South Carolina announces breach in Medicaid data

The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is informing 228,435 beneficiaries of Medicaid about a security breach involving protected medical data. The state agency recently detected the transfer of 17 spreadsheets dating back to Jan. 31 by a former employee to a personal e-mail account. The compromised information includes beneficiaries' names, addresses, Social Security numbers and Medicaid ID numbers.
