USDA approves sugar import increase

The Department of Agriculture has loosened restrictions on sugar imports and will now allow an additional 450,000 short tons. The Sweetener Users Association applauded the move but said, "USDA acknowledged that today’s increase is not likely to be the last one needed, and in our view it would have been even more helpful had USDA announced a quantity that would have, by itself, allowed stocks to reach USDA’s target range." An additional 400,000 to 500,000 short tons may be required, according to an informal survey of sugar brokers.
