Risk studies for New Orleans levees need an update, expert says

The Army Corps of Engineers needs to update its risk studies for the levee system in New Orleans and nearby areas, said Bob Jacobsen, a civil engineer hired by the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East. Although parts of the levee system could meet the requirements for federal certification, earthen levees along the East Bank could be unable to withstand 100-year storm surges in some areas, and the height of some levees could be an issue in the coming decades, Jacobsen said.
