Federal law prevents employers from discriminating against people based on their race, religion, national origin or sex, but federal law does not protect against employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, writes Brett Snider. Some states have protections that go beyond federal laws. Snider discusses the legality of other factors when hiring, including height, weight and credit status.
