Two mergers mean big changes in mass retailing

Now that Albertsons has acquired Shaw's Supermarkets and CVS and Jean Coutu bought Eckerd's, there's a sea change in mass market retailing and a reshuffling in the ranks of the leading drugstore chains in the U.S. The Eckerd sale is most significant because it puts CVS ahead of Walgreen in store count and revenues. For Albertsons, the Shaw's deal provides entry into a new market -- the six New England states.
