Small, large hospitals face different safety challenges

Experts say small rural and large urban hospitals face unique challenges in cultivating a culture of safety within each setting. Small hospitals can handle handoffs and transitions better than their large counterparts because the setting in such facilities "is close and personal," said Jennifer Lundblad, CEO of Stratis Health. However, small hospitals may have fewer opportunities for quality and patient-safety orientation and training than larger, urban hospitals.
