Q1 profits climb at three defense firms

Cost reduction and better productivity helped United Technologies report strong first-quarter profits. Meanwhile, strong growth in aerospace also pushed up profits at Honeywell. Shipbuilder General Dynamics also posted higher profits but said bad weather hurt its marine-systems business and the timing of deliveries hurt its combat-systems business. The company fell short of a forecast by Wall Street analysts.
