L.A. rail system enforced for seismic events

A double-gasketed, convex-convex joint system will line part of Los Angeles' new $898 million, six-mile rail extension and keep it functional in case of a seismic disturbance. It is the first known use of the unique segment system, which can "flex" during an earthquake but remain stable when movement stops. The Gold Line light-rail extension will open in 2009.
