Hints by the Obama administration that the president's proposal to create government-backed health insurance is open to compromise caused alarm among some of the president's supporters in the Democratic Party. Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, said it is "way too early" in the debate to walk away from government-sponsored insurance.
