NBCT: Why standardized testing impedes student learning

As testing season begins in May, one National Board Certified Teacher says she worries that teaching students test-taking strategies actually will harm their education. Sujata Bhatt writes in this blog that high-stakes tests are not a measure of what students have learned, but actually put students' true education -- learning to be productive, engaged citizens -- on hold during the test-taking period because educators must show students how to take multiple-choice exams.
