Rep. Cantor says GOP to stand firm on deficit reduction

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., has been named to a presidential task force to look into deficit reduction; he promptly sent a note to Democrats to say that Republicans "will not grant their request for a debt limit increase" without an overhaul of the budget process or significant spending cuts. Democrats responded quickly. "Congress will not permit the nation to default on its obligations because it would be beyond irresponsible to do so," said Brian Fallon, a spokesman for Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.
