Sen. Alexander touts safety of nuclear energy amid Japan crisis

Nuclear power is still a clean and safe source of energy despite the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan, said Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn. "Since the 1950s, there's never been a fatality in connection with the Navy reactors," said Alexander, referring to about 100 naval ships that have operated on nuclear energy. There are also no recorded deaths from radiation at any of the country's nuclear facilities, he added.
