Google is planning nothing less than a reinvention of the venture capital business, says Bill Maris, managing partner of Google Ventures, the search giant's VC division. Google is using a data-driven, academic approach to assess the potential of new innovations and is aggressively seeking stakes in the startups it deems worthy. "Google has its big-boy pants on. ... We've got huge leverage to invest in anything we want," Maris says.
