Panels that both reflect sunlight and incorporate layers of nanostructured photonic crystals are envisioned as a way to more cost-effectively cool buildings and homes by sending heat back into space. The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy has awarded a $400,000 grant to Stanford researchers to pursue the concept, which would in essence reverse the process common in traditional solar hot-water panels.
