Taxes exacerbate Brazil's medtech trade deficit, industry group says

Brazil's exemption of public-sector hospitals from paying taxes has the unintended effect of stunting exports and favoring imports of medical technology devices, according to the industry association ABIMO. The medtech trade deficit grew from $1.7 billion in 2007 to more than $3.7 billion in 2012, ABIMO said, adding that tax reform for domestic manufacturers is critical if Brazil is to reduce its overall health care deficit.
