Tenn. lawmakers advance plan for free college tuition

Tennessee lawmakers recently gave the green light to a measure that will allow students to attend for free two-year community colleges or colleges of applied technology. The Tennessee Promise program seeks to serve first-generation college students and low-income students, said Richard Rhoda of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. Rhoda also noted that the plan will be funded, in part, by interest and earnings from a $300 million surplus from the state's lottery scholarship program.
